HARNESSING THE POWER OF THE REGENERATIVE MOVEMENT TO HEAL THE PLANET

Client: Flow Kana

Based in the heart of the Emerald Triangle, Flow Kana was the leading sun-grown cannabis brand in California that sourced from, and empowers, Northern California’s locally-owned, independent farms.

Objective

Design and produce an exclusive multi-day immersive conference that demonstrates the impact cannabis has had on thought leaders from different industries. Leverage this experience to launch an ongoing series of content that positions Flow Kana as progressive thought leaders in the industry. Build national, mainstream awareness and normalization focused on the benefits of cannabis while creating consumer demand for regenerative agriculture

My Role: Executive Producer & Brand Strategy

Zach took this from concept to execution and owned all aspects of its incarnation. He designed the event experience, created the content strategy and talent recommendations, managed all event operations, vendor relations and logistics. He also informed the strategy of how to leverage the experience by professionally recording all talks, building a brand to amplify the message and coordinating launches of content.

The two day event - which included tours of regenerative cannabis farms, on-site “glamping”, fireside chats, and farm-to-table meals paired with Flow Kana’s sun-grown cannabis - featured TED Talk-style presentations and panel discussions exploring the critical role cannabis holds as a link between people, science and medicine, environmental health, human creativity and productivity, future building materials, regenerative farming and social justice

Speakers Include: Jason Silva (Emmy-nominated MC), Snoop Dogg (Icon), Opal Tometi (Co-founder Black Lives Matter), Steven Kotler (NY Times best-selling author), Jason McLennon (Buckminster Fuller prize-winning architect), Winona LaDuke (Environmentalist, Indigenous Activist, VP Candidate), Karim Webb (Restaurateur, Entrepreneurial Activist), David Bronner (CEO Dr Bronners), and More Deliver Powerful Calls to Action.

IMPACT & LONGEVITY

This event was a smashing success. The production was flawless, the speakers were world class, the food was incredible and over 300 guests shared in this unique experience. The event was picked up by many major media outlets (Business Insider, Forbes, Mashable). All the content was professionally captured and launched under a new brand “Flow Talks”. Flow Talks was meant to be on ongoing speaker series with industry leaders discussing the impact cannabis has had on their lives and careers.

Flow Sessions” was also launched from this, with Jason Silva hosting podcast discussions with brilliant minds. The goal with all of this was to use thought leadership and mainstream personalities to normalize cannabis and share values associated with a responsible industry. In doing this, Flow Kana would be recognized as a leader on the national scale, created more opportunity for expansion when cannabis is legalized nationally.

GMO RIGHT2KNOW MARCH &
CA PROPOSOTION 37: LABEL GMO’S

Client: Dr Bronners

Dr Bronner's Magic Soaps is an American producer of organic soap and personal care products headquartered in Vista, California. The company was founded in the late 1940s by Emanuel Bronner and continues to be run by members of the Bronner family.

Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps has championed a number of causes related to drug policy reform, animal rights, genetically modified organisms and fair trade practices.

Objective:

Launch a national campaign to bring awareness about GMO’s and demand for GMO labeling. Organize a parade-like march from Brooklyn, NY to Washington, DC. Produce major events at the launch and the completion of the march, as well as daily rally’s that coincide with the marchers route and timing. Organize a coalition of influential advocates, associations, brands and non profits to support, fund and define the messaging. Leverage this coalition to pass ballot measures.

October 1-16, 2011, a nationwide event called the Right2Know March took place in order to raise awareness of the importance of GMO labeling. The marchers were hoping to catalyze change in the government regarding the labeling and use of genetically engineered foods, “Genetically Modified Organisms," (GMOs), which people consume without their knowledge.

Participants spent 16-days completing a 313-mile march, which began in New York City and ended in Washington D.C. The group marched through communities, along highways, slept in campgrounds, ate fresh meals prepared in a mobile kitchen and Dr Bronners foam-tub offered warm, sudsy showers each night. We hiked across cities and townships and brought our GMO-labeling message to rallies, festivals, campgrounds, and farmers' markets. We hosted speakers, exhibits, press opportunities, cookouts, and teach-ins, set up rally’s at natural food coop’s in each city we visited, and we were successful in generating a buzz around the Right2Know issue. The campaigned ended with a festival in-front of the White House, where activist, business leaders and politicians spoke about the importance of this issue.

Early supporting organizations include the International Federation of Organic Agricultural Movements (IFOAM), Non-GMO Project, Center for Food Safety, Food Democracy Now, National Co-operative Grocer Association, Organic Trade Association, The Organic Center, the Independent Natural Food Retailers Association (INFRA), Farm and Ranch Freedom Alliance, and the Northeast Organic Farmers Association of NY.

Business sponsors include Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps, Kamut International, Nutiva, Nature’s Path Foods, Inc., Organic Valley, Rapunzel, Stonyfield Farm, and United Natural Foods Inc.

IMPACT & LONGEVITY

The Right2Know march generated enough attention from the public and the press that GMO’s entered the mainstream conversation in the US. While developing this campaign, an international coalition was formed comprised of leading organizations, associations and brands related to agriculture, CPG products and farming. The influence of these groups, combined with their aggregated audience, catapulted GMO labeling into a movement. Shortly thereafter, various states including California (2012), Washington (2013), Oregon (2014) and Colorado (2014) had ballot initiatives to demand labeling, but each state lost due to aggressive spending from biotech opposition. In 2016, Congress passed a law to establish a national benchmark for the labeling of genetically modified food in an attempt to give people more information about what they eat and standardize labels across the country. Also, the Non GMO Project, the leading GMO-free certification group, has certified over 60,000 products from over 3000 brands responsible for over $30 billion in sales in 2019. As of 2018, 38% of consumers report intentionally buying more Non-GMO certified products, and this number is increasing by 9% each year.

Building off the momentum created by the Right2Know March, in 2012, California launched Proposition 37, a ballot initiative aimed at requiring labeling of genetically modified ingredients and food. This is initiative was backed by many of the coalition members from the March. Zach was responsible for launching a grassroots awareness campaign in Northern California. For the three months leading up to the elections, Zach and his team produced regular events and actions every day throughout the region. There were street teams at grocery stores, speakers at festivals, billboards along highways, murals painted on buildings, film screenings and more. Unfortunately, the ballot did not pass, loosing by just under a 3% margin.
